Japanese Traditional Tanto: the Dragon Blade

There is a reason the dragon has presided over warrior culture for centuries. It does not simply decorate, it commands. This Japanese traditional tanto channels that ancient authority from the first glance: a blade with a flowing Damascus-finish surface, a guard alive with twin dragons locked in eternal confrontation, and a dark wooden saya that sets it apart from every standard production piece. Compact, precise, and unmistakably intentional, this tanto does not whisper its presence. It announces it.

Craft Behind the Legend

This traditional tanto is forged around a T10 steel blade, enhanced with a refined Damascus-style finish that highlights an elegant layered grain pattern across the entire surface. The result is a sense of depth and movement, where every shift in tone reflects the craftsmanship and forging mastery behind the blade.

At 33 cm, the blade perfectly embodies the compact authority of the tanto form: a sharp chū-kissaki with a clean yokote line, precise shinogi geometry, and a carefully integrated bohi groove that lightens the blade while enhancing balance and handling.

Entirely forged using traditional methods and hand-finished throughout, this tanto reflects a piece where every detail has purpose, balance, and intention.

The Tanto - The Samurai's Last Line of Defense

The Tanto is the shortest blade of the traditional Japanese sword family, worn by samurai as their final weapon of last resort. Compact and razor-sharp, it was designed for close-quarters combat and personal defense, and was also used in the ritual of Seppuku, making it one of the most culturally significant blades in Japanese history. Our Tanto replicas are crafted with the same quality materials and attention to detail as our full-size blades, delivering an authentic and beautifully finished piece. Whether you’re a collector, a history enthusiast, or looking to complete your Japanese sword collection, explore our full Japenese Tanto collection and own a blade steeped in samurai tradition.

Tanto

The Dragon Guard

The tsuba of this tanto knife is its defining statement. Cast in warm brass with a deliberately aged patination, it presents two dragons (sōryū) in high-relief confrontation, their scaled bodies coiling outward from a central raised medallion, talons extended, manes flowing in frozen motion. The casting is crisp and deeply detailed, individual scales catching the light with precision that commands attention at close range. A gilded engraved habaki in brass bridges blade and guard with quiet refinement, while the matched fuchi-kashira set carries the same ornamental language across the full length of the handle, creating a koshirae of rare thematic coherence.

A Tanto Built to be Seen

The tsuka, wrapped in a tight black diamond hineri-maki tsuka-ito over black samegawa, offers a firm and confident grip, its 15 cm length perfectly proportioned to the blade. The dark wooden saya, finished in a deep reddish-brown tone that sets it apart from the ubiquitous black lacquer of standard production tanto, is secured with a thick black sageo in a draping arrangement that completes the aesthetic. From the restless grain of the Damascus steel to the twin serpents on the brass guard, every component of this Japanese traditional tanto speaks the same language: power, mythology, and the unyielding spirit of the warrior tradition made permanent in steel and wood.
