Kōryū Wakizashi (光龍) – Light Dragon

£240.00

T10 Steel High hardness and excellent cutting performance.
full tangBlade running through the entire handle for maximum strength.

The Kōryū Wakizashi takes its name from two kanji of rare symbolic force: light and dragon, united in a blade forged using traditional swordsmith methods from T10 high-carbon steel. A genuine gunome hamon emerges from differential tempering, while the white samegawa tsuka, gilded dragon menuki, and lacquered saya adorned with a luminous dragon compose a wakizashi of striking chromatic precision.

Kōryū Wakizashi Sword: Where Light Meets the Dragon

Its name carries a duality that few blades dare to embody. Kōryū (光龍) binds two forces into a single identity: , light and brilliance, and ryū, the dragon. In Japanese tradition, the luminous dragon does not simply inspire awe. It represents the power to transcend all obstacles through clarity of mind and spiritual strength. The Kōryū wakizashi sword is built around this symbolism, a blade where every visual choice, from steel to lacquer, carries the weight of that ancient promise.

Forged for Those Who See Beyond the Blade

The Kōryū wakizashi is forged using traditional swordsmith methods in T10 high-carbon steel, chosen for its exceptional edge retention and the depth it lends to a finished surface. The blade presents a bold gunome hamon, an undulating wave running the full length of the cutting edge, born from differential tempering that hardens the edge while preserving resilience through the spine. A clean bohi runs the full blade length, its crisp channel drawing the eye along the steel while a raised shinogi ridge divides the surface into distinct planes, each catching light differently as the Kōryū sword moves.

The Samurai's Trusted Companion

The Wakizashi was the shorter blade worn alongside the katana by Japanese samurai, together forming the iconic Daisho, the symbol of the samurai class. Lighter and more compact than a katana, the Wakizashi was used in close combat, indoor fighting, and as a personal sidearm never left the samurai’s side. Our Wakizashi replicas are crafted with the same attention to detail and quality materials as our full-size katanas, delivering an authentic and beautifully finished blade. Whether you’re a collector, a history enthusiast, or looking to complete your Daisho set, explore our full Wakizashi collection and bring a piece of samurai heritage home.

Wakizashi

A Blade Dressed in Contrast

What sets this wakizashi apart is its refusal to blend in. The ji and shinogi-ji share the same consistent polish as the rest of the blade, their reflectivity shifting naturally with every change in angle and light, casting long clean reflections that reveal the precision of the grinding work. Against this bright surface, the luminous hamon band traces its bold gunome path along the edge with cold, precise clarity. The contrast is not decorative coincidence. It is the visual language of the Light Dragon itself: geometry and brilliance held in permanent tension. The chū-kissaki tip is proportionally balanced, finishing the blade with the composed authority of a classically favored form, neither aggressive nor understated.

A Koshirae Built for Ceremony

The handle is wrapped in white cotton tsuka-ito, worked into a tight hineri-maki diamond pattern over samegawa with its characteristic pebbly texture visible through each opening in the braid. Gilded dragon menuki anchor the grip at traditional staggered positions. The fuchi, detailed with golden floral relief, continues this white-and-gold chromatic harmony that defines the entire Kōryū wakizashi koshirae. The saya is finished in a silver-metallic lacquer and carries a full-length polychrome dragon in blue and yellow, coiling across the lacquered surface with the contained energy of a creature ready to ascend. A navy blue and white braided sageo, finished with tassel ends and knotted at the koiguchi, completes a piece designed to command every room it enters.
