Akikaze Wakizashi Sword: the Spirit of Copper Wind

Its name is carved into kanji: 赤風, the red wind, the copper wind. In Japanese tradition, this force of transformation speaks of seasons that pass and leave their mark on everything they touch. The Akikaze wakizashi sword carries this symbolism into every detail of its construction, a blade that embodies both impermanence and enduring strength. From the first moment it clears its woven leather saya, it commands the space around it with the quiet authority of a sword built to mean something, not merely to exist.

Forged with Purpose: Finished with Precision

The Akikaze sword is built on a foundation of T10 steel, one of the most respected high-carbon steels in Japanese-style sword production, prized for its edge retention and structural integrity. The blade is forged using traditional swordsmith methods, and runs full tang through the tsuka for a balance that feels deliberate in the hand. A bo-hi (棒樋) is carved cleanly into the steel, reducing mass without sacrificing presence and producing the characteristic whispered note of a blade moving through air with purpose.

The Samurai's Trusted Companion

The Wakizashi was the shorter blade worn alongside the katana by Japanese samurai, together forming the iconic Daisho, the symbol of the samurai class. Lighter and more compact than a katana, the Wakizashi was used in close combat, indoor fighting, and as a personal sidearm never left the samurai’s side. Our Wakizashi replicas are crafted with the same attention to detail and quality materials as our full-size katanas, delivering an authentic and beautifully finished blade. Whether you’re a collector, a history enthusiast, or looking to complete your Daisho set, explore our full Wakizashi collection and bring a piece of samurai heritage home.

Wakizashi

Gold, Copper and Shadow

The visual identity of the Akikaze wakizashi is built on deliberate contrast. The round copper tsuba, large and substantial, is engraved with bamboo and checkerboard motifs, a centerpiece that anchors the entire koshirae. The brass habaki is engraved with a traditional kamon, a rare and personal detail that elevates this piece above generic production. The fuchi and kashira echo the bamboo motifs in copper, creating an ensemble where every fitting speaks the same visual language. Beneath the black diamond tsuka-ito, a gilded dragon menuki coils at the grip, symbol of strength and wisdom, felt as much as seen.

A Blade That Belongs in the World

The saya of the Copper Wind departs from convention with intention: a wooden core wrapped in woven leather straps, matte black and precise, with a natural leather accent at the koiguchi that warms the palette without softening the drama. The tsuka combines faux black stingray samegawa and wood beneath a tight diamond-pattern braid in black leather, secure and correct in hand. At 51 cm of blade and 76 cm overall, the Akikaze carries the weight and presence of a wakizashi conceived for both ceremony and use. It is a sword that asks to be held, displayed, and understood as a complete object, where the name 赤風 and the craft it represents arrive together, inseparable and entirely resolved.
