The blade surface carries a deep crimson high-gloss lacquer treatment with a deliberate spatter effect near the habaki, evoking the aesthetic intensity of a battlefield at dusk. That same crimson bleeds into the saya, a roiro-inspired lacquered wood scabbard with a red-to-near-black gradient and a matching spatter overlay that gives it genuine visual depth. The gilded brass habaki catches the light at the blade-to-tang junction, its warm gold tone creating a single moment of contrast that makes the red burn brighter around it. The sageo is black, grounding the ensemble without interrupting its flow.

A Handle Worthy of the Blade

Grip the tsuka and the design intention becomes fully clear. A faux red ray skin samegawa covers the handle beneath a tightly executed black hineri-maki wrap, its diamond openings revealing the vivid red beneath in a pattern that runs the full 27 cm of the handle length. The result is a signature red-on-black diamond rhythm that ties the hand directly to the blade’s color story. The fuchi and kashira form a confirmed matched set in antiqued iron, each engraved with a chrysanthemum (kiku) motif that repeats with deliberate cohesion across both fittings. The custom ji-sukashi tsuba completes the assembly: an organic multi-lobed silhouette with openwork cutouts, low-relief surface decoration, and a gold accent at the habaki junction that echoes the warmth of the brass collar below.
