The Meito, One Piece’s Legendary Blade Classification

In the world of One Piece, the most powerful and renowned swords are classified as Meito (名刀), meaning “famous blades.” Every Meito has earned its reputation through the master swordsmith who forged it, the legendary swordsman who wielded it, or both. Within the Meito classification, blades are further ranked by grade:

  • Saijo O Wazamono (最上大業物) : the 12 Supreme Grade Blades, the most powerful swords in existence. Mihawk’s Kokuto Yoru is the most famous of these.
  • O Wazamono (大業物) : the 21 Great Grade Blades. Zoro’s Wado Ichimonji, Shusui, and Enma all belong to this category, as does Kozuki Oden’s Ame no Habakiri.
  • Ryo Wazamono (良業物) : the 50 Skillful Grade Blades. Zoro’s Sandai Kitetsu belongs here, along with many other celebrated swords across the series.
  • Yoto (妖刀) : Cursed Blades, a cross-category classification for swords said to bring misfortune or death to their wielders. The entire Kitetsu lineage and Trafalgar Law’s Kikoku are the most famous examples.

Kikoku – Trafalgar Law’s Cursed Blade

The Kikoku is the nodachi-style cursed blade wielded by Trafalgar D. Water Law, the Surgeon of Death and captain of the Heart Pirates. Classified as a Yoto (cursed sword) and a Meito of unknown grade, Kikoku is an oversized blade with a distinctive skull-shaped tsuba and a black scabbard, as theatrical and lethal as its owner. Ame no Habakiri – Kozuki Oden’s Blade

One of the two legendary swords of Kozuki Oden, the only samurai ever said to have wounded the Emperor Kaido.
