Kaija Katana Sword (海蛇) – Sea Snake

The Serpent in Every Detail

The tsuba is the visual and symbolic heart of the Kaija katana. Cast in copper alloy, it takes the form of a coiled sea serpent, its body sculpted in high relief with gold highlights that trace each articulated scale against a deep blackened ground. In Japanese tradition, the hebi embodies protection, transformation, and the hidden wisdom of moving water. The habaki beneath it is engraved with snake scales, continuing the serpentine language directly into the collar. Flanking the tsuka, a pair of black dragon menuki are set at traditional positions under the diamond wrap, creating a visual dialogue between sea and sky that runs the full length of the grip.

Blue, Gold and the Weight of the Ocean

The tsuka is hand-wrapped in a blue diamond hineri-maki pattern over faux white stingray skin, the contrast between deep navy and bright white nodes producing the kind of visual clarity that marks a carefully finished piece. The smooth black alloy fuchi and kashira frame the grip with deliberate restraint, ensuring nothing competes with the tsuba’s sculptural presence. Above all, the lacquered wooden saya commands its own attention: sky blue and gold grain painting across its body, with black koiguchi and kojiri, and a blue sageo finished with an orange fastener that echoes a sunset breaking over open water. Held together, these elements form a complete aesthetic statement. A sword where every surface, from the serpent’s coiled scales to the celestial depth of the scabbard, feels as though it was drawn from the same vision of the ocean at the boundary between darkness and flame.
