Shin’en Katana Sword (深淵) – The Abyss

£280.00

T10 Steel High hardness and excellent cutting performance.
full tangBlade running through the entire handle for maximum strength.

Some blades do not reflect light; they consume it. The Shin’en katana sword (深淵, “The Abyss”) is forged using traditional swordsmith methods in black T10 high-carbon steel, its surface drinking in every ray while a genuine Gunome hamon ripples along the edge. Gilded dragon menuki, gold-and-black floral fittings, and an engraved and lacquered black saya complete a blade that embodies the duality between darkness and hidden beauty.

Shin'en Katana Sword: Where Darkness Holds Light

Shin’en (深淵). In Japanese, the word names an abyss without a visible bottom, a depth where darkness and hidden truth become indistinguishable. This Shin’en katana sword was conceived from that single idea: a blade that does not reflect the world around it, but absorbs it. Gold emerging from lacquered shadow. Every element of this katana is an argument for the same philosophy, that the most powerful things do not announce themselves. They wait, and they endure.

Forged in Shadow: Tempered in Fire

The blade of the Shin’en sword is forged using traditional swordsmith methods in T10 high-carbon steel, then submitted to genuine differential hardening. The result is a gunome hamon, wide and dramatic, with an organic nie-deki boundary where martensitic crystals catch the light at the edge of the temper line. The ashi legs projecting toward the cutting edge, the boshi sweeping cleanly around the kissaki tip, and the scattered nie crystals within the hamon zone are the marks of a blade that has been through fire, and survived it with intention.

Shadow and Gold: Unified

The Koshirae of The Abyss

The fittings of this katana form a unified world of their own. The rounded black alloy tsuba carries a three-dimensional gold-colored flower and shiishi, its eyes set with deep blue crystal accents on a blackened ground. The menuki beneath the black diamond ito wrapping echo the same guardian theme in cast gold-tone brass, positioned precisely under each hand. The matched fuchi and kashira present chrysanthemum and tomoe motifs in gold relief against black, completing a coherent all-black and gold koshirae set of rare thematic discipline. The habaki is gilded brass, engraved with a kikko tortoiseshell honeycomb pattern framed by horizontal bands, an unusually ornate detail at this tier. The roiro-nuri saya, finished in mirror-gloss black lacquer, carries an engraved motif along its face.

The two-tone finish of this blade defines its visual identity. The shinogi-zukuri construction, high-ridged and clean, separates these two surfaces with architectural clarity. A single bo-hi fuller runs the blade’s length, cleanly cut with well-defined walls. Every transition, from yokote to kissaki, from ji to shinogi, is resolved with the confidence of a blade built around correct period geometry. The tori-zori curvature positions the deepest point of the arc near the blade’s center, where functional and aesthetic balance converge.
