Kokuyō Katana Sword (黒曜) – Obsidian

£250.00

Damascus Steel Wavy pattern with balanced strength.

Named after the Japanese word for obsidian, the Kokuyō katana sword carries the dark soul of volcanic stone in every detail: black Damascus steel etched with patterns that mirror frozen lava flows, a silver-plated dragon tsuba, hand-wrapped black diamond ito over white samegawa, and a black lacquered saya streaked with white, faithful to the mineral it honors.

Kokuyō Katana Sword: Born from Obsidian Fire

Kokuyō (黒曜) means obsidian: that volcanic glass born from the meeting of fire and darkness, revered for millennia as a stone of protection and hidden truths. This Kokuyō katana sword translates that ancient symbolism into forged steel, carrying the same deep black intensity, the same arrested motion, the same sense that something immense and dormant waits beneath the surface. From the storm-dark Damascus body to the coiling dragon that commands every fitting, this blade does not ask for attention. It commands it.

Damascus Steel: Obsidian Soul

The blade of the Kokuyō katana is forged using traditional swordsmith methods in pattern-welded Damascus steel, its layered grain revealed across the full blade face through acid etching. The result is a deep charcoal-black surface with a flowing itame and mokume grain pattern that mirrors the arrested movement of volcanic rock, undulating, restless, alive. Against this dark body, the cutting edge bevel shares the same natural finish as the rest of the blade, its surface continuous and uninterrupted, allowing the Damascus grain to travel from spine to edge without contrast or interruption.

Traditional Craftsmanship, Uncompromising Quality

A katana is more than a sword, it’s a symbol of precision, discipline, and Japanese heritage. Our katanas are crafted with respect for traditional sword-making standards, offering you a reliable, durable, and beautifully finished blade. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced collector, you’ll find the perfect katana for your needs.

Katana

The Dragon Across Every Surface

The Kokuyō sword carries a single mythological theme with total conviction. The round silver tsuba is carved in sukashi openwork, a full-bodied ryū dragon with defined scales, clawed feet, and an open-mouthed head. That same dragon appears in the silver-plated menuki seated beneath the black diamond wrap, and in the matched relief work of the fuchi and kashira. The habaki bridges blade and guard in two-tone brass and black, engraved with a kikko tortoiseshell geometric pattern, a detail of unusual richness that anchors the entire koshirae with quiet authority.

A Blade Built for Permanence

The tsuka is hand-wrapped in a tight hineri-maki diamond weave of black ito over faux white samegawa, a traditional and structurally correct construction that feels as deliberate in the hand as it looks in display. The shinogi-zukuri geometry is correctly and cleanly executed: iori-mune peaked spine in matching dark finish, a chū-kissaki with a sharply defined yokote, and a tori-zori curvature that gives the blade its commanding arc. The lacquered wood saya in gloss black with white line accents mirrors the blade’s own contrast, completing a sword where every element, from the Damascus to the glossy lacquer of the scabbard, has been chosen to express one unified presence: dark, mythological, and built to endure.
